Thomson Ch'ng was one of the founding delegates of the Council of International Students Australia (CISA) and served as the 4th National President of the Council for two consecutive terms, 2013-2015. He was awarded the Malaysia Students' Council of Australia (MASCA) Testimonial Australia’s Gold Award in 2011 and subsequently the NSW Premier’s International Student of the Year Award (Higher Education) in 2013.

Thomson has served as the Vice-President for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Youth Organization, a leading youth organization representing young people in the region.
